Since the launch of the Zen3 Threadripper 5000 series, most consumers could only hope to obtain one through an OEM with a bound board. Not anymore. Later this year, it’s expected that AMD Threadripper Pro 5000WX products will be available for the DIY market. ServeTheHome and WCCFTech have since covered the news.
Formerly, only workstations such as the Lenovo P620 and Dell Precision 7865 Tower come equipped with Zen3 Threadripper 5000 series processors.
What’s offered?
According to WCCFTech and other sources, AMD will release the following processors.
At the low end, the 5945WX with 12 cores and 24 threads will be the entry-level processor.
- 5955WX with 16 cores and 32 threads
- 5965WX with 24 cores and 48 threads
- 5975WX with 32 cores and 64 threads
- 5995WX with 64 cores and 128 thread
All of these processors will be utilizing the WRX80 chipset and sWRX8 socket. Despite having the same pin layout as sTRX4 sockets, they will NOT work with them. Similar to how both Skylake and Coffee Lake processors both used LGA 1151 but were incompatible, the Threadripper products cannot use other sockets and chipsets even if they have the same layout.
The Threadripper Pros, unlike their non-Pro counterparts, harbor a variety of security features such as PSB, locked vSOC rail, etc. This technology is similar to Intel’s vPro technologies.
What happened to the non Pros?
Whether it be just another kill-off due to low demand or it being too late to the party, non-Pro Threadripper 5000 processors will not be coming to the consumer market. If a consumer doesn’t desire the Pro series’ features and price tag, they will either have to buy a Zen2 Threadripper 3990X, a Ryzen 9 5950X, or similar.
